The New Version print screen

The above print screen is from the New American Standard Version which we will refer to as the “new version”.  All of the new versions agree with the New American Standard Version on changing Joseph to father.  Notice the Greek word for “father” in the New American Standard version is Strong’s number G3962.  This is not the same Greek word that is used in the King James Bible for Joseph (G2501).  The reason that the new versions do this is because the corrupt Greek New Testament Westcott and Hort text that they are translated from has the Greek word for father (G3962) instead of the Greek word for Joseph (G2501).  This comparison of the underlying Greek texts of the new versions and the King James Bible tells us that the new versions and the King James Bible are translated from different Greek texts.  This is the reason for the difference between the King James Bible and the new versions in Luke 2:33.  This is just one place that the King James Bible and the new versions disagree.  Strong’s numbers for G3962 and G2501 are two different words with two different meanings.  Strong’s number G3962 is the Greek word for father and Strong’s number G2501 is the Greek word for Joseph.  The disagreement between the King James Bible and the new versions is not about how to translate a single word.  The disagreement between the King James Bible and the new versions is about what Greek New Testament text to translate into English.  Now let’s compare the Greek New Testament Textus Receptus text of the King James Bible and the corrupt Greek New Testament Wescott and Hort text of the new versions below.

The above print screen is the Greek New Testament Textus Receptus text which the King James Bible was translated from.  Notice that the Greek word for Joseph (G2501) which is the same as the Greek word in the King James Bible print screen above.  The King James Bible print screen and the Greek New Testament Textus Receptus text print screen agree with one another and have the same Greek word (G2501).

The above print screen is the corrupt Greek New Testament Wescott and Hort text which the new versions are translated from.  Notice that the Greek word for father (G3962) which is the same as the Greek word in the new version print screen above.  The new version print screen and the Greek New Testament Wescott and Hort text print screen agree with one another and have the same Greek word (G3962).

Here again we can see that the King James Bible and the new versions are translated from different Greek texts.  The King James Bible is translated from the Greek New Testament Textus Receptus text and the new versions are translated from the corrupt Greek New Testament Wescott and Hort text.  These two Greek New Testament texts are not the same.  There is not a single Greek New Testament text like some would have you to believe.  There are nearly as many Greek New Testament texts as there are English translations.

The new versions commit blasphemy against the Lord Jesus Christ by saying that Joseph is the father of the Lord Jesus Christ.  This attacks the doctrines of the virgin birth of Christ and the deity of Christ.  This changes who the Lord Jesus Christ is.  This changes the Bible and what the Bible teaches.

John 10:33 (KJV) The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.

John 10:33 gives us the definition of blasphemy of a man claiming to be God.  The Jews accuse the Lord Jesus Christ of committing blasphemy “being a man, makest thyself God”.  What is ironic is that the Jews commit blasphemy against the Lord Jesus Christ while accusing the Lord Jesus Christ of blasphemy.  Since the Lord Jesus Christ is “God was manifest in the flesh”, the Jews commit blasphemy against the Lord Jesus Christ by rejecting the virgin birth of Christ.  The virgin birth of Christ is what makes the Lord Jesus Christ God manifest in the flesh.  The new versions do the same thing by saying that Joseph is the father of the Lord Jesus Christ.  The new versions make the Lord Jesus Christ just a man instead of God.

1 Timothy 3:16 (KJV) And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

1 Timothy 3:16 is about the Lord Jesus Christ being God.

The defenders of the new versions will argue that the King James Bible refers to Joseph and Mary as the parents of the Lord Jesus Christ.  They will use this as an excuse for the new versions saying that Joseph is the father of the Lord Jesus Christ in Luke 2:33.  Let’s look at Luke 2:27 below.

Luke 2:27 (KJV) And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law,

(Luke 2:27 NIV) Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required,

(Luke 2:27 ESV)  And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law,

(Luke 2:27 NAS77)  And he came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to carry out for Him the custom of the Law,

(Luke 2:27 RSV)  And inspired by the Spirit he came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the law,

(Luke 2:27 NKJV)  So he came by the Spirit into the temple. And when the parents brought in the Child Jesus, to do for Him according to the custom of the law,

Luke 2 :41 is another example of the Bible using parents.  Let’s look at parents in Luke 2:41 below.

Luke 2:41 (KJV) ¶ Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover.

(Luke 2:41 NIV) Every year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the Festival of the Passover.

(Luke 2:41 ESV)  Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover.

(Luke 2:41 NAS77)  And His parents used to go to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover.

(Luke 2:41 RSV)  Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the Passover.

(Luke 2:41 NKJV)  His parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover.

The NIV, ESV, NAS77, RSV and NKJV agree with the King James Bible in Luke 2:27 and Luke 2:41.  The obvious conclusion is that since these new versions agree with the King James Bible, therefore the King James Bible is correct.

The Bible uses parent as a broad term that can mean biological parents, adoptive parents, or someone that raises a child.

Biological parents

Adoptive parents

Mothers, Fathers, Grandparents, step-parents can all be parents of a child.

Father is a much narrower term that means the biological father of a particular child.  When father appears by itself as in the new versions in Luke 2:33 the meaning is biological father not adoptive father.

Now let’s look at an example of an adoptive father in the Bible.

Esther 2:7 (KJV) And he brought up Hadassah, that is, Esther, his uncle’s daughter: for she had neither father nor mother, and the maid was fair and beautiful; whom Mordecai, when her father and mother were dead, took for his own daughter.

Notice that Mordecai took Esther for his own daughter.  Esther is the daughter of Mordeai’s uncle.  Mordecai is NOT the biological father of Esther.  Mordecai is the adoptive father of Esther NOT her biological father.

Esther 2:15 (KJV) Now when the turn of Esther, the daughter of Abihail the uncle of Mordecai, who had taken her for his daughter, was come to go in unto the king, she required nothing but what Hegai the king’s chamberlain, the keeper of the women, appointed. And Esther obtained favour in the sight of all them that looked upon her.

The Bible tells us that Mordecai adopted Esther as his daughter.

Esther 9:29 (KJV) Then Esther the queen, the daughter of Abihail, and Mordecai the Jew, wrote with all authority, to confirm this second letter of Purim.

It is interesting how scripture states that Esther the queen is the daughter of Abihail and Mordecai.  Esther is the biological daughter of Abihail and the adoptive daughter of Mordecai.  The Lord Jesus Christ is the biological son of God the Father and the adoptive son of Joseph.

Some critics of the King James Bible will use Luke 2:48 to justify the new versions in Luke 2:33.

Luke 2:48 (KJV) And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.

There is a problem with using Luke 2:48 to justify Luke 2:33 in the new versions.  We must ask the question who is speaking in Luke 2:33?  The speaker is the narrator of the Bible which is the Holy Ghost.  Now we must ask the question who is speaking in Luke 2:48?  Mary is speaking in Luke 2:48 and not the narrator of the Bible, the Holy Ghost.  This is a significant difference.  Mary is lying when she says “thy father and I”.  Mary knows that Joseph is not the father of the Lord Jesus Christ.  Mary knows that God is the father of her son, the Lord Jesus Christ.

Conclusion:

1. We can come to a number of conclusions about the new versions based on this research.  Any Christian knows that Joseph is not the father of the Lord Jesus Christ.  Any Christian knows that God the Father is the Father of the Lord Jesus Christ.  Any Christian knows that the Lord Jesus Christ is God manifest in the flesh.  When we look at the new versions and they tell us that Joseph is the father of the Lord Jesus Christ, then we immediately know that these versions are wrong and need to be discarded as the word of God.  Any version that says that Joseph is the father of the Lord Jesus Christ is a corrupt version.  The new versions commit blasphemy against the Lord Jesus Christ by saying that Joseph is the father of the Lord Jesus Christ.  The new versions attack the doctrines of the virgin birth of Christ and the deity of Christ.  The new versions deny the virgin birth of Christ and the deity of the Lord Jesus Christ.  These new versions commit blasphemy against the Lord Jesus Christ.  Christians need to reject any version that blasphemes the Lord Jesus Christ.  The new versions need to be trashed and thrown out for blasphemy against the Lord Jesus Christ for saying that Joseph is the father of the Lord Jesus Christ.

2. The second conclusion that we can come to is that the King James Bible and the new versions are based on different Greek New Testament texts.  The King James Bible’s Greek New Testament Textus Receptus text says “Joseph and his mother” teaching that Joseph is not the father of the Lord Jesus Christ in Luke 2:33.  The new versions say that Joseph is the father of the Lord Jesus Christ because the corrupt Greek New Testament Westcott and Hort Greek text that they are translated from says that Joseph is the father of the Lord Jesus Christ in Luke 2:33.  Therefore, the corrupt Greek New Testament Westcott and Hort Greek text of the new versions needs to be marked as a corrupt Greek New Testament text and needs to be trashed and rejected as being the word of God.

3. The third conclusion is the translators of the new versions demonstrate their gross incompetency by choosing the corrupt Greek New Testament Westcott and Hort Greek text as the foundation for their English translation.  This is more than reason enough to throw out the new versions based on this gross error in judgment of the translators of the new versions.  Luke 2:33 is just one error in these new versions.  How many other errors are there in these new versions?  The corrupt Greek New Testament Westcott and Hort Greek text and the new versions in English commit blasphemy against the Lord Jesus Christ and deserve to be completely rejected and thrown out.  Luke 2:33 in the King James Bible demonstrates the superiority of the King James Bible and the Greek New Testament Textus Receptus text that it was translated from.  Furthermore, this demonstrates the superiority of the abilities of the King James Bible translators to choose the correct New Testament Greek text to translate into English.  The King James Bible exalts the Lord Jesus Christ by teaching that God is the Father of the Lord Jesus Christ and not Joseph.  The difference between the King James Bible and the new versions is not about some disagreement about what a single Greek word means in English.  The difference is not about the King James Bible translators saying a single Greek word in English means “Joseph” and the new versions’ translators say that same Greek word means “father” in English.  The difference is the new version translators chose to translate their new versions from a different corrupt New Testament Greek text than the King James Bible translators chose to translate from.  The King James Bible’s Greek New Testament Textus Receptus text has “Joseph”.  The corrupt Greek New Testament Westcott and Hort Greek text has “father”.

4. The fourth and final conclusion is that the King James Bible is the perfect and infallible word of God.  The King James Bible brings honor and glory to the Lord Jesus Christ by placing Him in his rightful place as the Son of God.
